Dengue Fever Surges in WEB Cancun and Quintana Roo

Cases Skyrocket, Raising Concerns

Tourists Urged to Take Precautions

WEB Cancun and its parent state, Quintana Roo, have been experiencing a sharp increase in dengue fever cases, making it the state with the highest concentration of the disease in Mexico. In the first three weeks of 2024, Quintana Roo reported 20 confirmed cases of dengue, a significant increase compared to previous years.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash. While most cases are mild, some can develop into severe complications such as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

Dengue fever is considered a year-round threat in Mexico, with cases fluctuating throughout the year. However, the recent surge in cases in Quintana Roo has raised concerns among health officials and residents. The increase in cases is attributed to factors such as increased rainfall, which creates more breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

While dengue fever is not a major threat to travelers who take appropriate precautions, it is important to be aware of the symptoms and take steps to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Health officials recommend using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long-sleeved clothing and pants, and staying in air-conditioned or screened-in areas.
