Confederate States Army

The Military Force of the Confederate States of America

Description and History

The Confederate States Army, also referred to as the Confederate Army or the Southern Army, was the military land force of the Confederate States of America (CSA) during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The CSA consisted of 11 states, seven of which were original members and four of which seceded from the United States after the outbreak of hostilities.

After its formation, the Confederacy immediately initiated plans to establish, organize, and equip an army. Despite its desire for peace, the Confederate leadership recognized the necessity of preparing for potential conflict.

The Army of Confederate States was the regular army of the CSA, authorized by Congress on March 6, 1861. It had an authorized strength of 15,015 men.
